Step behind the scenes and discover the creative world of film production in this hands-on two week intensive course designed for 16–19 year olds. Hosted at Pinewood Studios, one of the world’s most iconic film studios, this course introduces students to the essential skills of hair styling, screen makeup, and costume design for film and television.

During the first week, students take part in an intensive practical workshop programme where they learn the core techniques used by professional film crews. Sessions include basic hair styling for camera, character makeup design, ageing and effects techniques, costume preparation, and understanding continuity for film. Students will work with professional tools and materials while learning how hair, makeup and costume combine to create believable on-screen characters.​ The second week focuses on collaboration and production. Students will work together as part of a mini film crew, applying their newly learned skills to support the creation of a short film. Working alongside other creative roles, participants will design and execute hair, makeup and costume looks for the characters, gaining real insight into how departments work together on a film set.

The course culminates in the production and screening of the finished short film, giving students a practical credit and a valuable introduction to the collaborative world of filmmaking.  This course is ideal for young people interested in film, television, theatre, makeup artistry, costume design, or creative production, and provides a supportive introduction to the skills and teamwork required in the screen industries.

Step into the creative world of film production and learn how the visual details of a film set are brought to life in this two week intensive course for 16–19 year olds. Taking place at Pinewood Studios, this hands-on course introduces students to the practical skills involved in prop making and set decoration for film and television.

In the first week, students take part in an intensive programme of practical workshops designed to build foundational skills used by professional art departments. Sessions explore designing and creating props, basic model making, painting and finishing techniques, ageing and distressing materials, and understanding how objects and set dressing help tell a story on screen. Students will also learn about continuity, visual style, and how props and set decoration contribute to character and world-building in film.

During the second week, students will work collaboratively as part of a film production team, applying their new skills to help design and create the visual environment for a short film. Participants will produce props, dress the set, and work closely with other departments to ensure the look of the film supports the story and characters.

The course concludes with the production and screening of the completed short film, giving students the opportunity to see their creative work appear on screen and experience the collaborative nature of filmmaking.

This course is ideal for young people interested in film production, art and design, model making, creative crafts, or set design, and offers an exciting introduction to the work of a professional film Art Department.

Step into the role of a filmmaker and learn how stories are brought to life on screen in this two week intensive course for 16–19 year olds. Based at Pinewood Studios, this hands-on course introduces students to the creative and technical foundations of film directing and cinematography, giving participants practical experience of visual storytelling and working on a film set.

During the first week, students take part in a series of intensive workshops exploring the core principles of filmmaking. Sessions cover what makes a successful short film, the roles within a film crew, and the production workflow from idea to final edit. Participants will develop key directing skills such as working with actors, shaping performances, and translating ideas into visual storytelling. Alongside this, students will learn the fundamentals of cinematography, including shot composition, camera movement, shot sizes, lighting, and basic sound recording. Students will also explore storyboarding, shot listing, location scouting, and production planning, gaining an understanding of how directors and cinematographers collaborate to create a film’s visual style. Practical exercises will include rehearsing and shooting short scenes, followed by editing sessions to understand film language and postproduction workflows.

In the second week, participants will work in small groups to develop, plan, and produce an original short film. Beginning with pitching ideas and creating mood boards, students will move through the stages of pre-production, rehearsals, lighting tests, and filming, taking on directing and camera roles within their production teams. The project continues through editing and sound post-production, giving students a complete experience of the filmmaking process from concept to final cut.

The course culminates in a screening of the completed short films, followed by reflection and discussion about the filmmaking process and potential career pathways in the screen industries.
